Pleasanton School Board OKs Drug-Sniffing Dogs On Campus

PLEASANTON (KCBS) – The Pleasanton School Board has voted to approve the use of drug-sniffing dogs at three high school campuses.

Trustees voted 5-to-0 to allow the Pleasanton Police Department to conduct random searches with its canines in the school parking lots and locker rooms when students aren't around.

The program was sparked by a rise in drug-related suspensions and expulsions at Foothill, Amador Valley and Village High School.

KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:

Foothill High School has had 29 drug-related suspensions and expulsions so far this year, which is more than last year's 26.

Other school districts in the area, including Livermore, Dublin and Castro Valley, already use drug-sniffing dogs on campus.

The program won't be implemented until board policy is developed by the end of next month.
