Trustees Confirm New Cal State East Bay President

HAYWARD (CBS SF) – Cal State East Bay has a new president, as longtime San Francisco State administrator Leroy Morishita was confirmed on Wednesday by the CSU Board of Trustees.

Morishita has served as interim president since last July and said he knows he is taking office at a challenging time.

"There are very big budgetary issues that confront the campus," said Morishita. "But I feel the campus is positioned well to move forward and the people on the campus really want to make the university a better place and to provide access and opportunity for students."

KCBS' Doug Sovern Reports:

In response to the outrage over soaring presidential salaries, the CSU Board also voted to cap them at $325,000 a year, or no more than a ten percent raise over what the outgoing president received.

"I don't know what my new salary will be yet because that hasn't been discussed," said Morishita. "But I think the amendment and the resolution that was passed by the Board of Trustees seems to be a fair one for new presidents as they come into the position. Hopefully, we'll address a lot of the concerns that were raised by the public and by the legislature."

Morishita said he hopes to work with students and faculty to raise the school's profile throughout the East Bay.

Morishita served in a variety of senior leadership positions at San Francisco State during his 29-year tenure at the campus.  University officials said they will conduct a national search for a vice president of administration and finance to fill Morishita's position.
