EPA Head Sees Green Jobs Potential In San Francisco's Bayview

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— The head of water for the Environmental Protection Agency paid a visit to an innovative facility at Bayview Hunter's Point this week.

The EcoCenter at Heron's Head Park is a 1,500 square-foot facility that was funded in part by federal stimulus money.

The EPA's Nancy Stoner took a tour of the facility, noting the opportunities for clean energy jobs.

KCBS' Margie Shafer Reports:

"The environmental services industry is one of the growing areas in the U.S. economy. It's already a very large industry with about 119,000 firms across the country and it continues to grow, "she said.

San Francisco City College offers courses in green job training and sustainability, and will soon offer training at the center.

Dean of the School of Science and Mathematics at City College San Francisco, David Yee said the partnership is a great opportunity to maximize resources.

"A lot of times the experience is done in the classroom, but it doesn't actually let them see how it's done out in the real world," Yee said.

City College offers a green jobs training program and sustainability courses.
