OAKLAND (KCBS)— Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said she has had it with a small, violent fringe element within the Occupy Oakland protests and claimed it is using the city as a “playground.”
Quan spoke Monday in an interview following another chaotic round of street protests in which police units from surrounding areas were on hand to support the cash-strapped city’s police department.
“They’re taking away resources from my city and creating a situation where it’s making it more difficult for me to keep the city safer,” Quan said.
KCBS’ Doug Sovern Reports:
Charles Pine, head of the Recall and Restore committee, said the mayor still doesn’t get it.
“This was not a playground. That’s the wrong word. This was a battlefield,” he said.
Pine remembered another street scene in November where the mayor actually tried to negotiate when protesters attempted to take over an old building. Then in December, the mayor said she wasn’t sure The Port of Oakland could be defended from even a few protesters.

“So why are we surprised with that kind of talk that the street thugs who are a small portion of Occupy, apparently the dominant portion, are able to do what they do,” he asked.
City Hall reopened to the public again Monday with security guards inside and a strong police presence around Frank Ogawa Plaza.
A total of 409 people were arrested on charges ranging from failure to disperse and vandalism on Saturday night according to Oakland’s Interim Police Chief Howard Jordan.
Jordan spoke Monday afternoon and denied claims by the protesters that it was the police who turned violent first.
Jordan claimed commotion about Saturday’s ‘Move-In Day’ event started about a month ago when they started to advertise on their website that the intent of this march was to occupy a building.
“They were intent on confronting the police, fighting us. They brought a lot of homemade self-defense equipment with the intent of defeating any attempt by us to prevent them from getting into a building,” he said.
Jordan said the police were protecting property and that protesters intentions were to enter that property.
“We saw a much more aggressive, volatile situation. They have thrown liquids at our officers. When we deployed tear gas, they picked it up and threw it back at our officers. The demeanor of the crowd was much more volatile in the past.”
When asked about protesters who claim that it is reasonable self defense to throw a canister back at police Jordan said that is “not accurate.”
“When we got there we gave them an opportunity to leave. We gave several dispersal orders. Most normal citizens don’t want to stand and face off with police and throw things at them,” he said.
Jordan added that when police ask you to leave, that’s an opportunity to do just that.
“That’s not an opportunity to confront police or run at them in order to accomplish any kind of mission. That’s an assault on an officer,” Jordan said.
Some protesters claimed that there wasn’t a fair opportunity to disperse and that tear-gas would follow.
Jordan said that it’s OPD policy to read the dispersal order verbatim. Jordan claimed to have reviewed a video of the protests in which 15 dispersal orders were in one particular incident.
Jordan said of over the 400 arrested, 35 percent were from Oakland.

Well..unless I read this differently, the protesters have control of our Oakland. Our police are hand-cuffed, the mayor and council originally in cahoots with the occupiers, now realize they’ve opened a can of worms and 5 million in the hole, bad publicity for Oakland, are incapable of putting the worms back in the can. So, we homeowners/taxpayers/residents/shoppers will be held captive too. Exhausted police cannot make all the emergency calls. So mayor and council, what’s your plan to get us out of this? Set up another tent like you did before and pow-wow with them? Please let us captives know since it was reported that 45% do not reside in Oakland…the same that panhandle during the day to do mayhem at nite. Thanks mayor and council for putting Oakland in the spotlight on national media. Sure tourists are lining up to visit and spend vacation monies here to land at our airport, visit our museum, zoo, Chabot Space and Science, Jack London Square, downtown including our own Chinatown…

Not true. There was an Occupy camp in a public park behind city hall for about six weeks. The City of Dallas entered into an agreement with Occupy Dallas to allow overnight camping provided the Occupy Dallas people adhered to guidelines. These guidelines were not adhered to and Dallas Police disbanded the camp.
There are still some Occupy Dallas people camped somewhere, but I’m not sure where. Dallas is more conservative than a lot of large cities and the Occupy movement never picked up steam here. I doubt there were ever 100 people at the Occupy camp here.

When the Tea Party had events, they were limited to a few hours at a time, well organized and complete with coherent message.
The effect was positive and the impact almost immediate as elected representatives began to actually listen to their constituents.
The movement also brought about a freshman class of Conservative representatives who are serving to put the brakes on Obama’s progressive agenda.
The occutantrum however has gone on almost endlessly for months.
The felt effect is millions squandered on clean-up, police presence and a lengthy rap sheet of crimes and behavior so disgusting that the Obama administration who helped create the astro turf movement, was forced to distance itself for fear of further sullying of Barry’s legacy.

I believe Obama was trying to stir up some sort of civil unrest by which he could declare martial law, suspend elections, or otherwise suspend our rights. Fortunately the Occupiers have demonstrated that they are nothing but trash – no surprise there.

This is the type of violent and destructive behavior that will proceed a declaration of Martial Law. Look for it to happen on much larger scale, when the poll numbers demonstrate Obama will loose his re-election bid. They will peak shortly before November 4, giving the administration (it will be Holder or one of the other minions, to make certain Obama’s hands are not soiled by the decision) the green light to forestall the election. Once civil order is in place, so too will be the newly ordained “President for Life” Obama. Alinsky drew up the plans, Chavez demonstrated how to implement them, and OWS brings it home to the USA. Interesting observation. Though not a certainty, it is in the realm of the possible. The only fly in the ointment is that this has never been done to a society as heavily armed as this society. That is the wild card which renders the outcome of this kind of “naugahide coup” uncertain. Regardless of how it plays out, there is no harm in keeping one’s powder dry and one’s eyes open.

The mayor is trying to deflect blame which rightly beongs to her. She alone is responsible as she tolerated this in the beginning. And what you tolerate, you will get more of. In this case, her toleration of the OWS movement ended up giving her more than she and the good people of Oakland bargained for. Now it is time to pay the piper for her lack of a spine and her failure to do her duty and uphold law and order.I’d like to think that she might learn from this experience but liberals never learn – especially from their own mistakes. I watched the entire protest online. I was appalled at the unprofessionalism and brutality of the Oakland police. I watched officers knock a young woman off her bike and drag her off. She had her back to them and never saw it coming. I also watched a videographer knocked to the ground and beaten with a baton three, four, five times. I saw the tear gas canisters launched and the bullying, pushing, and arrogance was reprehensible. Mayor Quan should contact Mayor Tom Barrett of Milwaukee to discuss the appropriate way to work with the Occupy Movement, if she won’t step down. The episode was a disgraceful display by Oakland police and the Mayor of Oakland.
