Animal Update: The Importance Of Spaying, Neutering

(CBS SF) - The San Francisco SPCA is offering spay and neuter services free of charge for the entire month of February, in honor of National Spay or Neuter Day.

"National Spay or Neuter Day is aimed at raising awareness of the importance of spaying or neutering pets," explained Dr. Jack Aldridge of the SF SPCA, "

KCBS' Jeff Bell Reports:

Why is spaying or neutering such a priority for the SPCA?

"There are over 6 million animals that pass through our nation's shelters every year and over 4 million of those animals are euthanized. The single most effective way to reduce these numbers is to spay or neuter, which reduces the number of homeless animals born each year," explained Aldridge.

"Many of the unwanted animals in shelters are the offspring of beloved pets," he continued. "And although this promotion is in February, we're committed to the cause throughout the year and offer low cost or no cost spay or neuter surgeries to those who qualify."
