California Backlash Grows Over Planned Parenthood-Komen Split

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) -  The local chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation is joining six other California affiliates to request an exemption from the organization's decision to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood.

The move comes at the same time that Director Mollie Williams, Komen's top Public Health Official based in Los Angeles, resigned from the organization, reportedly in protest of the funding decision.

Officials from Komen have said the decision to pull funding from breast cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood are part of a new policy that prevents the organization from giving money to any group that is under investigation.

Planned Parenthood is the subject of a congressional inquiry into whether taxpayer funds were used for abortions.

Critics say Komen is simply caving to pressure from anti-abortion groups.
