CASTRO VALLEY (CBS SF) — A Berkeley police officer shot a man in Castro Valley after the suspect pinned another officer between two cars, according to an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. near Center Street and Grove Way, Alameda County sheriff’s Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

At least two Berkeley police officers were attempting to take a suspect into custody when the man pinned one of the officers between his vehicle and the officers’ unmarked car, Nelson said.

Nelson said that was when another officer shot the suspect.

The suspect was taken to Eden Medical Center and his condition was not immediately known, Nelson said.

The officer who was pinned between the vehicles was taken to a hospital with serious hand and leg injuries that are not considered life-threatening, Nelson said.

Nelson said he did not know why the officers were pursuing the suspect.

Two “undercover” Berkeley officers were trying to take a known bad guy into custody. They were WAY, WAY out of their area. One is substantially injured, requiring hospitalization and the other has to shoot the bad guy. Now I’m all for shooting bad guys when they need to be shot, but I have some questions about this matter. 1 – Did they notify the agency, whose area they were in? 2 – If they decided they needed to stop this person, did they request the agency (in whose area they were in) to do the stop for them with a fully marked police vehicle and uniformed officer? What made them decide they needed to apprehend the bad guy right at that moment, at a crowded intersection which poses all sorts of problems with bystanders and other motorists, not to mention traffic?
