San Francisco May Allow Food Trucks At Colleges, Hospitals
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – Colleges and hospitals in San Francisco would be allowed to have food trucks on their campuses under legislation introduced the city's Board of Supervisors meeting this week.
The proposal by Supervisor Scott Wiener would alter the city's planning code, which prohibits food trucks on such campuses if they are outside of commercial districts.
Under the current law, campuses such as San Francisco State University and Kaiser Permanente Medical Center are not allowed to have food trucks on their property.
KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:
"San Francisco values choice in food options, and this legislation will increase choices," Wiener said in a statement.
"Allowing institutions to provide their employees, students, or patients with additional food options, including food trucks, is a good thing and should be encouraged. It makes no sense to ban these campuses from doing so," he said.
Wiener's office said the supervisor also plans to introduce more comprehensive food truck legislation in the future and has convened a working group of stakeholders, including operators of both food trucks and brick-and-mortar businesses, commercial property owners and city department officials.
