Bags Of Cocaine Found Near Walnut Creek Lounge

WALNUT CREEK (CBS SF) -- Several packages of cocaine were found by Walnut Creek police on Friday night less than 30 feet from the entrance of Lift Lounge and Grill, which has been the scene of recent bar violence in the city, Walnut Creek police said.

Officers were on a routine patrol at 11 p.m. when they found a small container near the bushes in a parking lot next to Lift Lounge at 1321 Locust St., police said.

The container held several bags of cocaine in packaging consistent with drugs ready to be sold, police said.

Police said the container was about 20 to 25 feet away from the entrance of the lounge.

The packages contained approximately six grams of cocaine with an approximate street value of $500. Officers were unable to find who placed the drugs in the bushes, police said.

On Feb. 7, the Walnut Creek City Council unanimously voted to deny an appeal from the owners of Lift Lounge that would have allowed the establishment to stay open until 12:30 a.m.

Instead the council decided to cut back the hours of the bar's alcohol service to 11:30 p.m. for 90 days, at which point the owners can reapply to extend the hours.

This was the second such decision reached by the council against Lift Lounge following a string of violence in the area of the bar and grill.

Between the opening of the business in November 2009 and the Feb. 7 council meeting, Walnut Creek police said they have received 80 calls for service at Lift Lounge, mainly connected to drunken patrons leaving the bar and causing a disturbance.
