Man Found Dead In SF Mission District Was Strangling Victim

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - A man found dead on a street in San Francisco's Mission District last month was apparently strangled, a police spokesman said Friday.

Richard Sprague, 47, was discovered dead in the 100 block of Julian Avenue at about 7:45 a.m. on Feb. 19, according to police.

Someone had called police that morning to report that a man had been lying in the street for more than an hour and hadn't moved, police said.

Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Andraychak said Friday that the preliminary report by the medical examiner's office indicates that Sprague died from strangulation.

No one has been arrested for the murder. However, 42-year-old Roland Pouncy was arrested after police found him with Sprague's ATM card just nine hours after the discovery of the body.

Pouncy pleaded not guilty to a charge of receiving stolen property last week and remains in custody on $55,000 bail. He will return to court for a preliminary hearing next Wednesday.
