Daily Madden: 49ers Gamble On Randy Moss

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The San Francisco 49ers signed wide receiver Randy Moss to a one year contract Monday. The six time Pro Bowl selection will be the oldest position player on the team.

"There was a time that I thought Randy Moss was the best player in the NFL," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "Now, at 35 years old, where is he compared to that? If he's anywhere close, it is worth the gamble."

Madden said it remains to be seen whether Moss' speed can still threaten a defense.

"He's not going to ever be a possession guy. He's not going to ever be a vicious blocker down field or any of those things. I mean, he's Randy Moss and he's going to go deep...going vertical, straight up the field."

Peyton Manning remains unsigned after discussions with at least two teams.

"Peyton Manning wants to be liked," Madden said. "I don't think he wants to go to one of those divisional rivalry type things. I think he'd like to go to a team that you don't pay a lot of attention to, but a team that would have a chance to be a good team. Something like Switzerland, you know, they're neutral... I could see him going to a place like Arizona."

Madden said Manning has a great future on or off the field.

"He has a lot of talent. I wouldn't be surprised if some day he's the commissioner," said the former coach. (8:45)
