Driver Killed In Concord I-680 On-Ramp Crash

CONCORD (CBS SF) - A man who died after losing control of his white van and driving off of an on-ramp to Interstate Highway 680 in Concord Tuesday afternoon has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner's office as 45-year-old Joseph Conway.

Conway, a resident of Ione in Amador County, was the sole occupant of the van that crashed at 12:56 p.m. on the Willow Pass Road on-ramp to northbound Highway 680, California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer John Fransen said.

The van traveled down an embankment, struck a light pole and tree before coming to rest in the parking lot of an REI sporting goods store on Diamond Boulevard, Fransen said.

Conway was pronounced dead at the scene.

The CHP is investigating the cause of the crash, which occurred in rainy conditions, according to Fransen.

The Willow Pass Road on-ramp was briefly blocked because of the accident, but reopened by 2:45 p.m., he said.
