Diehard Apple Fans Brave Bay Area Storm to Score New iPad

LOS GATOS (CBS SF) - Apple aficionados braved long lines and rain Friday to buy the latest version of the iPad, on sale at Apple stores the Bay Area.

Apple's latest tablet went on sale at 8 a.m. local time Friday in the U.S. and nine other countries.

The new model comes with a faster processor and a much sharper screen. It also boasts an improved camera, similar to that of the latest iPhone.

KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:

Hours ahead of opening, the line was already long outside the Apple Store in Los Gatos, where the first shopper at the door said he arrived at 5:00 p.m. Thursday.

"It's like an addiction," that first-in-line man explained. He added that he was prepared for the rain and brought an umbrella, but was glad to have the benefit of the overhang immediately outside the store doors.

Earlier in Asia and Europe, Apple stores and other retailers drew die-hard fans.

In Hong Kong, a steady stream of buyers picked up their new devices at preset times at the city's sole Apple store after entering an online lottery. The system required buyers to have local ID cards to help thwart attempts by visitors from mainland China, where the device isn't on sale yet.
