OAKLAND (CBS/AP) – The Oakland Raiders have signed cornerback Shawntae Spencer to a one-year deal in their latest move to bolster their depleted secondary.
Spencer’s agent, Peter Schaffer, said Spencer thought the Raiders were the best fit for him and he is excited to make the move across the bay after playing his first eight NFL seasons with the San Francisco 49ers.
Spencer started 72 games his first seven years, including all 32 in 2009-10. But he lost his job in training camp last year and spent most of his final season with the 49ers as a reserve. He was cut by the 49ers last week.
His role with the Raiders is not immediately clear. Oakland cut its two starting cornerbacks from last season in Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson and signed free agent Ron Bartell last week.
