Student Raped At Santa Rosa Junior College; Classmate Arrested

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) - Santa Rosa police arrested a 30-year-old man on Monday suspected of sexually assaulting a student at Santa Rosa Junior College last week.

Marco DeAnda-Vargas was arrested Thursday night charged and with felony forcible rape, sodomy and sexual penetration. He was being held in Sonoma County Jail without bail on a federal immigration hold.

DeAnda-Vargas was set to be arraigned in Sonoma County Superior Court Tuesday afternoon.

DeAnda, 30, and the 23-year-old female student were acquainted through a class they were both in at the junior college, Santa Rosa Police Sgt. John Snetsinger said.

After class Thursday night, they went inside the Quincy Swim Center, which was closed at the time, Snetsinger said. "SRJC is not sure how access was made," Snetsinger said.

The victim reported the assault inside the swim center the next day to the Santa Rosa Junior College Police Department, and Santa Rosa police took the lead in the investigation, Snetsinger said.

Snetsinger said sexual assault victims sometimes delay reporting the incident to police because of fear, embarrassment, confusion or ignorance of the law.

The junior college is closed this week for Spring Break.

DeAnda is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. in Department 9.
