SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – Their “Battle of the Bay” charity bocce tournament is three months away, but John Madden and former 49ers coach Steve Mariucci are already trading barbs.

“John hasn’t made the playoffs in years,” Mariucci told John and the KCBS morning crew. “You need to get back on that Pilates machine and get ready for this thing.”

Mariucci said his own team was embarrassed in a tournament last week, so he’s decided to practice more.

“The thing I try to do is socialize,” Madden said. “If you play too much then you have to what you call focus. And then in if you focus you can’t mingle. And as you know, I’d rather mingle than do anything else.”

“You made the all-mingle team the last eight years,” Mariucci said. “Forget mingling, start practicing bocce.” (8:00)

Listen to the John Madden segment live weekday mornings at 8:15 on KCBS All News 740 AM/106.9 FM.
