Tech Report: Facebook Allows Friend Demotions

MENLO PARK (KCBS) — Just how many of your Facebook friends are really friends? The popular social networking site is now giving users the option of demoting people to acquaintances.

It’s a bit different from the old technique of hiding your “friend feed,” in that you will still hear from the person on your news feed, though not as often.

It’s designed for people who you aren’t close with but still want to be able to contact. It could also be useful for people who are chronic over-posters.

KCBS’ Larry Magid Comments:

You can either make people acquaintances one person at a time, or you can go into your friends list to select some of them as acquaintances and Facebook will even suggest other people you might like to include in that list.
