Archbishop Mitty Of San Jose Boys Win Div. II State Championship

SACRAMENTO (CBS/AP) -- Aaron Gordon had 33 points and 20 rebounds as Archbishop Mitty of San Jose defeated Las Costa Canyon of Carlsbad, 78-57, to win the California boys' Division II championship Friday at Power Balance Pavilion.

Gordon, just a junior, threatened his own state championship record of 21 rebounds, set last year, but came out of the game with 1:14 left after Mitty (31-3) had put the game away. Gordon's challenge to the record came as part of the Monarchs'41-25 domination of the boards.

David Travers was practically the whole show for La Costa Canyon (34-3), scoring 22 points, including all but six of the Mavericks'points in the first half. Matt Shrigley added 13 for La Costa Canyon.

The Mavericks were clearly hurt by Eric Magnuson's foul trouble. The 6-6 center, who will play football at Michigan, fouled out
after playing just 8:56.

It was Mitty's second straight state championship.
