Daily Madden: Don Nelson's Trip To The Hall Of Fame

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The announcement is not scheduled until Monday, but former Warriors coach Don Nelson has confirmed that he's been selected to the Basketball Hall of Fame.

"Can you tell the story of the NBA without mentioning Don Nelson? You can't," John Madden told the KCBS morning crew. "You go back to his days as a player with the Celtics and coaching and winning more games than anyone. You can't tell the history without mentioning Don Nelson. I'm not surprised that he's in the Hall of Fame now. I'm surprised that he wasn't in earlier."

Madden said he was happy to hear that Nelson was celebrating by playing a game of poker with music legend Willie Nelson.

The 49ers signed former New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs Wednesday.

"I think it's a great pickup for the 49ers," the former coach said. "He's not as good a short yardage and goal line runner as you think, weighing 265 pounds... But he is the best chipper in football. You know how the running back goes out on a pass and on his way out he'll chip or hit that outside pass rusher? There's no one that does it better than Brandon Jacobs."

Madden said 49ers running back Frank Gore is also an excellent chipper.

"(The 49ers) will have the two best chippers in football. The quarterback is going to love that, the tackles are going to love that and the outside pass rushers are going to hate it." (8:30)
