Oakland Hills Residents Complain About Rash Of Burglaries

OAKLAND (KCBS) - Residents have said burglaries surged in Oakland over the last year, and some Oakland Hills homeowners said properties have seen multiple break-ins over the past month.

The burglary rate citywide has climbed 42 percent since 2011, according to the Oakland Police Department. And some who live in the Oakland Hills claim the rate has doubled in certain neighborhoods.

KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:

Police Chief Howard Jordan acknowledged the disconcerting spike in crime at a packed community meeting Wednesday, where several who took the microphone complained they had been burglarized more than once.

"A lot of the homes that have burglar alarms, they've also been burglarized, so that's a little troubling for us as well," Jordan said.

Jordan assured skeptical residents that patrols in the hills were more frequent now because of the crime spree. He said having just 657 police officers on staff would not interfere with increased patrols there.
