SAN JOSE (CBS SF) — An apartment fire in San Jose Friday night left seven adults and four children displaced, a fire captain said.

The fire, in the 4000 block of Payne Avenue, was reported at 7:12 p.m. Firefighters had the blaze under control at 9:24 p.m.

The fire was contained to one upstairs apartment in the four-unit building, but the building was left uninhabitable because the power was turned off and a downstairs unit sustained some water damage, Capt. Anthony Melendrez said.

When firefighters arrived they found lots of smoke coming from the building, prompting them to call a second and then a third alarm.

The first unit to arrive cut a ventilation hole in the apartment and quickly doused the unit with water.

“Crews did a great job keeping the fire in the first apartment,” Melendrez said.

He said that a 33-year-old man living in the neighboring apartment jumped out of his second-story window when he was unable to get through his front door.

The man declined medical attention, but

Santa Cruz Police Search For Suspect 2 Bank Robberies

SANTA CRUZ (CBS SF) — Police are searching for a Santa Cruz County man who allegedly robbed a bank in Santa Cruz Friday evening and whom police believe may have also robbed a Capitola bank earlier this week, police said.

The robbery at a credit union in the 300 block of Front Street in Santa Cruz was reported around 5:10 p.m. Friday.

A man entered the bank and presented a note to a bank teller demanding cash, police said.

The teller complied, handing the suspect an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect fled, and officers who canvassed the area were unable to locate him.

Surveillance photos from the credit union and information from Capitola police, who are investigating a bank robbery that occurred earlier this week involving a similar suspect description, led police to identify Alex Wells, 25, as the suspect.

The Santa Cruz County man has not been located and police are asking anyone with information about his whereabouts to call (831) 420-5820.

checked him out anyway, in case the rush of adrenaline had caused him to not recognize his injuries.

“People are pretty amped up when they do something like that,” Melendrez said.

The unit that was on fire was destroyed and all 11 residents have been displaced.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced occupants with temporary housing.
