Santa Rosa Basketball Coach Arrested For Alleged Sex With Teen Girl

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) - A girls basketball coach at Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa has been arrested on suspicion of having sex with a 16-year-old student, a Sonoma County sheriff's sergeant said.

Andrew John Medeiros, 25, of Santa Rosa, was arrested Tuesday night at Piner High School, where he was employed as a student supervisor, on three felony sex offenses with a minor under age 18 and annoying or molesting a child, Sgt. Carlos Basurto said.

Medeiros posted bond on $50,000 bail and was released from Sonoma County Jail.

Medeiros met the 16-year-old girl at Cardinal Newman where he was the girls basketball coach last season, Basurto said.

The investigation began when the girl's parents contacted the sheriff's office after they discovered sexually explicit text messages between Medeiros and the alleged victim, Basurto said.

Medeiros also coached for the North Bay Elite Basketball Club. The club was founded in 2000 to provide elite high school girls basketball players with advanced instruction and exposure to higher level competition, according to its website.

Anyone with information about the alleged sexual misconduct is asked to call Detective Dave Berges at (707) 565-8290.
