Oakland Man Killed While Pushing Son In Stroller Identified

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A man who was fatally shot while pushing his 1-year-old son in a toy stroller at a housing project in East Oakland on Wednesday afternoon was identified by police today as 24-year-old Tyrell Omar Smith.

Sgt. Randy Wingate said Smith had recently moved from Richmond to Oakland.

Wingate said police don't have a motive for the brazen shooting, which occurred around 3:15 p.m. Wednesday in the 6500 block of Eastlawn Street, which is in the Lockwood Gardens housing project.

He said Smith was walking with his son when the suspect drove up, got out of his car, approached Smith on foot and shot him multiple times.

The suspect then got back into the car and drove off, police said.

The child was not hurt, he said.

A woman who lives in the area heard the shooting, came to the scene, brought the child to safety and contacted authorities, who then took custody of the boy, according to Wingate.

The boy was reunited with his mother at Oakland police headquarters later on Wednesday, he said.

Wingate said that although the shooting occurred in broad daylight, very few witnesses have come forward, and police don't have a solid description of the shooter.

However, Wingate said, there are a number of video cameras inside the housing complex and police are hopeful that video footage will help them identify the shooter and solve the case.

"We might have more information by tonight," he said.

Wingate said police don't yet know why Smith might have been targeted. He said Smith had never been stopped or arrested by Oakland police.

Oakland police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Oakland police said anyone with information about the shooting should call them at (510) 238-3821 or a tip line at (510) 773-2805.
