8-Year-Old Found Sleeping Alone In Napa Meth Lab Apartment

NAPA (CBS SF) - An 8-year-old Napa boy has been placed in protective custody after police found him sleeping alone in an apartment that contained a home methamphetamine lab, Napa police said.

The mother, 33-year-old Christina Smith, was found with Damian Phillips, also 33, at a business in the 1100 block of Imola Avenue at around 2 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Officers suspected they were both on drugs and arrested them.

The officers learned that Smith has an 8-year-old child, but she would not tell them where the child was, and gave conflicting information, police said.

Officers searched her apartment in the 3000 block of Hilltop Drive and found the child asleep. They also found evidence that someone had been manufacturing methamphetamine at the home, according to police.

The apartment contained chemicals, glassware, a syringe and a pipe, according to police. Investigators said the items were in areas of the home that were accessible to the child.

Police took the boy into protective custody. Child Welfare Services, the Napa Special Investigations Bureau and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration were called in to assist with the investigation.

Smith and Phillips were booked into jail on suspicion of methamphetamine manufacturing, child endangerment and related charges. They were each being held on $250,000 bail.
