Brother Of 49ers' Vernon Davis Accused In D.C. Assault

WASHINGTON (CBS / AP) -- D.C. police are investigating whether a man accused of striking a woman in the head with a hammer is responsible for a series of similar attacks, including the killing of a man visiting from Colorado.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier said Friday that 19-year-old Michael Davis was arrested Thursday and charged with aggravated assault.

Carolyn Mardis, a lawyer who has previously represented Davis's father, said Davis is the brother of NFL players Vernon Davis and Vontae Davis.

San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis tweeted that he received a disturbing call from back home on Thursday night.

"Hopefully he wasn't involved," the one-time Pro Bowl tight end posted.

Authorities say Davis attacked the 19-year-old woman in the same Washington neighborhood where the other attacks occurred. The woman has a serious head injury.

Police say officers responding to the woman's cries spotted Davis and during a footchase, he dropped a backpack containing a hammer believed to be the weapon used in the attack.
