Beef From Antioch Raley's Recalled After Pen Found In Meat Grinder

ANTIOCH (CBS / AP) -- A supermarket chain has been forced to recall all the ground beef at an East Bay store after an employee reported finding bits of chewed up pen in the store's meat grinder.

West Sacramento-based Raley's Supermarket issued the recall of ground beef products at its Antioch store on Sunday afternoon, the Contra Costa Times reports.

The newspaper said the worker discovered pieces of a writing pen while sanitizing the grinder. A small amount of meat that had been processed at the store on Sunday was sold before the recall went into effect.

Raley's spokesman John Segale said that while accidentally ingesting plastic fragments along with a hamburger would not be life-threatening, the company wants to spare customers the unwanted condiment.

Raley's operates 115 stores in California and 16 in Northern Nevada.
