Man Who Shot At Officers Found Dead On Bethel Island

BETHEL ISLAND (CBS SF) - Sheriff's deputies located a man suspected of fleeing from a traffic stop in Oakley and then firing at officers on Bethel Island Wednesday morning dead after he apparently shot himself, a Contra Costa County Sheriff's spokesman said.

Officers located the suspect dead inside his car at around 5 a.m. Wednesday morning in the area of Piper and Sugar Barge roads on Bethel Island after searching for him there for several hours, sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

The suspect fled from police in Oakley after they tried to pull him over for a traffic violation near the corner of East Cypress Road and Knightsen Avenue at 12:51 a.m., sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

Police chased the suspect onto Bethel Island, where the suspect shot at one of the officers near the corner of Piper and Sugar Barge roads, hitting a police car but not injuring anyone.

As police and sheriff's deputies searched for the suspect, residents in that area were advised to stay inside their homes and to lock all windows and doors, Lee said.
