5 Firefighters Hurt In 4-Alarm San Francisco Fire

SAN FRANCISO (KCBS) – A total of 37 people were displaced, and five firefighters were injured by a fire in San Francisco's Mission District that burned at least two multi-unit apartment buildings Sunday morning, according to the Red Cross.

A total of 30 adults and 7 children were displaced by the blaze, which was reported at a building near Duboce and Valencia streets just before 10 a.m., Red Cross spokeswoman Cynthia Shaw said.

All of those people have either been provided housing for the night or made their own arrangements, Shaw said.

Flames and smoke were seen pouring out of several windows on the top floor of a four-story apartment building with a business on the ground floor during the fire, according to a San Francisco fire department dispatcher.

Flames spread to at least one adjacent building, and firefighters attacked the blaze from the roof and the street.

KCBS' Ted Goldberg Reports:

Five firefighters were injured during the blaze. Two were hurt when a staircase collapsed inside one of the two buildings.

The fire was contained about 11:20 a.m., according to the fire department.

Several crews remained at the scene at 11:30 a.m. and several streets in the surrounding neighborhood continued to be shut down.

Dispatchers said some people had been transported to the hospital for injuries but would not say how many or who. A fire department spokeswoman has not returned calls seeking comment.

The five firefighters were injured when a staircase collapsed inside the apartment building.  Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

One resident was also injured during the fire.

The San Francisco Fire Department reports the blaze started shortly before 10 a.m.

One of the two buildings was a total loss.
