Employee At Napa State Hospital Injured In Assault

NAPA (CBS / AP) -- A patient at Napa State Hospital has been arrested in connection with an assault that left an employee injured.

Hospital spokeswoman Deborah Moore announced the arrest on Wednesday, a day after the assault. She did not release the patient's name or provide details about the incident although she did say the staff member was treated at a local hospital.

A union representative tells the Napa Valley Register the employee—a psychiatric technician— was injured while staff members were placing a patient in a restraint.

Brad Leggs of the psychiatric technicians' union said the incident occurred in an area housing non-criminal patients.

Napa State has been roiled in recent years by patient attacks on staff members, among them the strangling of a psychiatric technician in October 2010.
