Oakland's Mayor Quan Takes To 2 Wheels On Bike To Work Day

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— Hundreds of thousands of Bay Area commuters, including Oakland's mayor, pedaled to work Thursday for the 18th annual Bike to Work Day.

Toni Moore was in Oakland biking to work for the very first time and admired all the bikers she saw.

KCBS' Doug Sovern Reports:

"I think that's the way to go. We should all be more mindful of taking advantage of opportunities to get out of our cars," Moore said.

But the bikers could have been a bit more mindful of the laws. Some were seen running red lights and stop signs.

Even Mayor Jean Quan witnessed some rule breakers as she rode to City Hall from Eastmont Mall.

"There's sometimes in these more deserted areas where people don't always stop on the red, but I think as a group we did pretty good," Quan said.

BART doesn't relax its ban on bikes during rush hour, even on this special event day for bikes. Commuter Garrett Turner discovered this the hard way.

"I think it would be nice if they could take one of the cars and make it a bike car. I don't know how that would work out, if they didn't put any seats in, but it's an interesting thought," he said.

But there was good news for ferry riders with bikes commuting between Alameda, Oakland and San Francisco. If you take your bike aboard the ferry, you get to ride for free.
