Pit Bull Fatally Shot In San Francisco's Hunters Point

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A pit bull was killed in a shooting in San Francisco's Hunters Point neighborhood on Friday afternoon, police and animal control officials said Monday.

Police officers responded around 4:30 p.m. Friday to a report that a dog had been shot in the 200 block of West Point Road.

The female caller said she was in her home when she heard gunshots, then later went outside and found the wounded animal lying in a pool of blood, police said.

The pit bull was taken by a San Francisco Animal Care and Control officer to an animal hospital where it succumbed to its injuries Friday night, said Kat Brown, deputy director of the agency.

Brown said a necropsy of the dog found it was a female that was about one year old and had been shot once in the chest.

Officers were unable to find any witnesses to the shooting and no one came forward to claim ownership of the dog, police said.

Prior to the shooting, the pit bull had apparently frequently been seen running loose around the neighborhood, Brown said.

Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to call the Police Department's anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or send a tip by text message to TIP411.
