Copper Thieves Score Massive Haul in American Canyon

AMERICAN CANYON (KCBS) - American Canyon may have to spend as much as $7,000 to replace the roughly 1,000 ft. of copper wire snatched from Veterans Memorial Park sometime within the past week. A thief or thieves broke into a vault at the park, grabbing the pricey commodity.

The theft also means that the enormous American flag that's considered something of a hallmark of the park has to be taken down each night because there are no lights to illuminate the flag at night. The two floodlights flanking the massive flag pole, as well as other decorative lighting surrounding the pole, have dimmed because of the copper theft.

"It's created an additional cost and expense and effort to the city to now have to go in and replace a lot of wiring," lamented American Canyon's public works director, Michael Throne.
