Dumbarton Bridge Closed Memorial Day Weekend For Seismic Retrofit

MENLO PARK (CBS SF) -- Officials say the seismic retrofit work on the Dumbarton Bridge over Memorial Day weekend is on schedule.

All lanes on the bridge were closed Friday, May 25 at 10 p.m. and should reopen Tuesday, May 29 at 5:00 a.m.

During the closure, motorists are encouraged to take public transit or alternate driving routes. Motorists should allow extra time for travel and use other bridges, including Highway 237 and Hwy 92 via the San Mateo Bridge.

KCBS' Bob Butler Reports:

This weekend workers will replace the existing expansion joint on the western side of the bridge with a larger seismic joint. Caltrans will also raise sections of the bridge deck between 1 to 5 inches to allow the installation of seismic bearings in the months ahead.

The Dumbarton Bridge is 1.6 miles long and serves approximately 61,000 vehicles per day.

The retrofit project is slated for completion by early 2013.
