SALINAS (CBS SF) – A soldier from Salinas was killed while serving in Afghanistan on Saturday, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Monday.

Specialist Vilmar Galarza Hernandez, 21, was killed in Zharay, Afghanistan when his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device, defense department officials said.

Hernandez was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.
