Suit Alleges UC Berkeley Doctor Sex Abuse Caused Student Suicide

BERKELEY (CBS/AP) -- A lawsuit claims that a University of California, Berkeley student committed suicide after being sexually abused by a doctor at a university-run health center.

The suit was filed last week in Alameda County Superior Court by parents of 23-year-old Elgin Stafford. His body was found in a Los Angeles County canal in March.

The suit claims that Dr. Robert Kevess molested the student during medical examinations in 2010. It names the doctor and UC Regents.

Kevess has pleaded not guilty to 19 criminal counts, including sexual exploitation of a patient. Prosecutors haven't released the names of the alleged victims.

The doctor's attorney, Robert Beles, said his client wasn't responsible for Stafford's death. A UC spokesman said it will contest the negligence claims.
