OAKLAND -- Oakland police were at the scene of a crash that occurred as a driver was fleeing from officers early Wednesday morning, a police officer said.

Police tried to pull over the vehicle at 7:17 a.m. but the driver refused to yield, and instead accelerated away, police said.

There was a brief pursuit that ended at 7:20 a.m. when the car crashed into a fire hydrant in the 4000 block of San Leandro Street, according to police.
