State Treasurer Lockyer Files For Divorce; Wife Nadia Wrecks Car

HAYWARD (KCBS) - California State Treasurer Bill Lockyer filed divorce papers Friday, the same day his wife Nadia reportedly crashed her Mini Cooper near the couple's home in Hayward.

Hayward Police Sergeant Eric Krimm said Nadia Lockyer was served divorce papers for irreconcilable differences on Friday then crashed her car at 5:10 p.m.

She suffered minor injuries after crashing her Mini Cooper into a light pole just down the street from the Lockyer's residence.

KCBS' Doug Sovern Reports:

Krimm said she was not found to be under the influence, but was found at fault for making an unsafe turning movement and for being on her cell phone while driving.

After her air bag deployed, Krimm said a cooperative Mrs. Lockyer was taken to a local hospital where she was treated for minor injuries.

The announcement comes just a few months after Nadia Lockyer resigned from her post as an Alameda County Supervisor.  Her tenure was on shaky ground after it was revealed last February that she had been attacked by an ex-boyfriend in a local motel.  It was later learned that Lockyer and the man were involved in an extramarital affair, and that the couple met while both were in a drug rehab program.

Lockyer's spokesman, Tom Dressler, told KCBS the Treasurer's desire is to have the divorce resolved as privately and amicably as possible, and with the best interest of the couple's young son, Diego, in mind.
