Teen Mom Killed In East Oakland Shooting

EAST OAKLAND (CBS SF) - A 16-year-old girl with a young daughter was gunned down in an East Oakland shooting on Wednesday night that also wounded a second person.

The shooting was reported at 10:32 p.m. in the 2700 block of Talbot Avenue, near Interstate Highway 580. Police said one person was found dead and another was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.

Police have not identified the victim, but a balloon left at the scene of the shooting this morning read, "RIP Tatiounn Turner."

The victim's uncle, Brandon Turner, said his niece, a student at Oakland High School, had given birth to a baby girl the day after Thanksgiving last year.

He said she had dropped out of school when she was pregnant but went back after the baby was born. She lived on 99th Avenue, below East 14th Street, he said.

Her father, William Turner, was killed in a shooting in Oakland four years ago, and her cousin, 15-year-old aspiring firefighter Hadari Askari, was killed in a shooting in July, Brandon Turner said.

Turner said the family is not seeking revenge, but asked community members to come forward with information that would help police arrest Wednesday's shooter.

"I want justice served for my niece," he said.

Late Thursday morning, mourners gathered at the scene, attaching balloons to a fence in front of a home across from Oak's Market and Liquor Store.

One balloon had a message that read, "You'll be missed."

Several people at the scene were crying.
