Murky Future For Point Reyes Oyster Farm

POINT REYES NATIONAL SEASHORE (CBS / AP) -- The future of an oyster farm in the Point Reyes National Seashore is still murky after a new report criticized the National Park Service's environmental review of the farm.

The Marin Independent Journal reported that a National Research Council report on Thursday said the park service lacked strong scientific data needed to determine the impact of Drakes Bay Oyster Co. on the environment.

Part of the National Academy of Sciences, the council is a congressionally chartered group that provides policy recommendations.

The oyster farm has been in the park for decades, but its lease expires Nov. 30.

The owners want an extension, but the parks service environmental impact report states the "environmentally preferred" alternative is to let the permit expire.
