OAKLAND (CBS SF) — An off-duty San Francisco sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded a 17-year-old boy who allegedly tried to rob the deputy and his girlfriend near Lake Merritt in Oakland early Monday, according to Oakland police.

The deputy and his girlfriend told police that they were in the 300 block of Van Buren Avenue in Oakland’s Adams Point neighborhood at 1:34 a.m. when the suspect approached them and demanded money at gunpoint, according to police.

“The male off-duty officer felt threatened like this suspect was going to shoot his girlfriend,” investigating Sgt. Mike Gantt said.

KCBS’ Holly Quan Reports:

Police said he believed his life and his girlfriend’s life were being threatened so he discharged his firearm and struck the suspect, an Alameda resident whose name wasn’t released.

The 17-year-old boy received medical attention at the scene and then was transported to a local hospital, where he is listed in stable condition, according to police.

The deputy sheriff and his girlfriend weren’t harmed. Police said officers recovered a replica firearm at the scene.

Investigators said they believe the teenager was involved in at least two other robberies in the area shortly before the shooting.

According to Gantt, the juvenile suspect was thought to be involved in at least one other robbery earlier in the Rockridge area. He was carrying the ID of a previous robbery victim in his pocket when he was shot.

Monday’s incident comes after a 15 and 16-year-old were arrested last week for what police called a string of armed robberies in the night and early morning hours that also involved replica guns.

Oakland police said anyone with information should contact their major crimes section at (510) 238-3821.
