Concord Police Shoot Armed Suspect
CONCORD (CBS SF) -- An officer involved shooting occurred in Concord when a man armed with a pistol was uncooperative with police Monday morning, police said.
Police have identified the man as Jason Michael Kearny, 40, of Concord.
Police responded to reports of a suicidal man in the 2200 block of Blackfield Drive at 8:09 a.m.
Upon arrival police found Kearny armed with a pistol, standing in the driveway of his residence.
Police said Kearny was uncooperative and failed to adhere to verbal commands given by officers. Police said they initially attempted to use less lethal force, but were unsuccessful.
Police said they perceived Kearny as an imminent threat to themselves, nearby citizens, as well as a family member inside the home. When Kearny attempted to re-enter his house with his firearm, police shot him.
No officers were injured during the incident, police said.
Kearny surrendered to a police SWAT team and suffered non-life threatening injuries to his upper extremities, police said.
He was transported to John Muir Hospital for treatment, police said.
Kearny was arrested for being a felon in possession of a loaded firearm, assault with a deadly weapon, and obstructing or resisting an officer in performance of their duties by force or violence, police said.
Upon searching Kearny's residence, police recovered a loaded small caliber pistol, found inside a fish tank, police said.
Neighbors said they heard gunshots at approximately 8:15 a.m., said Lisa Feilbach, who lives on Lexington Road near Blackfield Drive.
A shelter-in-place order was issued shortly after the shots were fired and lifted at about 10 a.m., according to neighbors.
