OAKLAND (CBS SF) – A search of a West Oakland neighborhood for a suspect considered armed and dangerous has ended, and the suspect has been taken into custody, an Oakland police spokeswoman said.

An officer on patrol in West Oakland Thursday morning saw a male who was wanted on a warrant around 8 a.m., Oakland police Officer Johnna Watson said.

Police tried to stop the suspect, who sped off, prompting a brief car chase that ended when the suspect crashed near 14th and Adeline streets, Watson said. No bystanders were injured in the crash.

The suspect then fled on foot into nearby yards.

Police set up a perimeter and began to search an area between Adeline and Linden streets and 12th and 14th streets, Watson said.

As a precaution, nearby schools were placed on lockdown, according to Watson.

Oakland Unified School District spokesman Troy Flint said Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School at 960 10th St. and West Oakland Middle School at 991 14th St. were locked down around 8:45 a.m.

Police found the suspect, who has a history of carrying firearms, in a yard in the 1200 block of Adeline Street shortly after 10 a.m. and he was taken into custody and placed in the back of a police car, Watson said.

Watson said a K-9 unit from the Emeryville Police Department helped track down the suspect. The suspect suffered minor cuts to his hands but there were no major injuries, she said.

Police have not yet released the suspect’s name or the details of the warrant.
