SACRAMENTO (LIVE 105) – Deftones have always been renown for their unique sound – blending metal with a diverse host of styles. Part of that blend is due to the variety of musical influences on frontman and guitarist Chino Moreno. In a recent interview with Megan Holiday of Live105/San Francisco, Moreno shared his impressions on the influences of 80′s New Wave and on the rise of electronic music in recent years.
“I love some electronic music.” Moreno commented, “I’m not a big fan of dubstep but there is so much good electronic music out there.”
While Skrillex and other dubstep acts may be all the rage at the moment, Moreno goes for more classic electronic fare.
“I grew up in the eighties, that’s probably why I like some of the earlier electronic from Kraftwerk to all throughout New Wave and things like that.”
Moreno elaborated that he has always had respect for the early electronic pioneers that had to create their own sounds without the help of software.
“A band like Depeche Mode would go out and record them hitting a trash can with a steel rod or something and recording it. And that would be one of their sounds of the drums.” Moreno continued, “I love the creativeness of that kind of really raw sampling.”
Koi No Yokan, the latest record from the Sacramento band, drops on November 11th, then they hit the road beginning October 9th in Ventura, CA.
