UNION CITY (CBS SF) — The roof of a strip mall collapsed prior to the containment of a four-alarm fire early Wednesday morning in Union City, according to an Alameda County fire official.

Firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire at Alvarado Place Shopping Center at 31875 Alvarado Blvd. at 1:05 a.m. Crews had the fire contained around 3:30 a.m., fire officials said.

About 50 residents in an apartment building behind the retail center, located at 4125 Dyer St., have been allowed to return home following a precautionary evacuation, fire officials said.

Nine businesses, including a beauty salon, a travel agency and multiple restaurants were damaged in the fire, according to fire officials.

One firefighter sustained a laceration to the back of his hand while fighting the fire and was transported to a local hospital, Alameda County fire department spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.
