Explosives Found In Vallejo Home, Man Arrested

VALLEJO (CBS 5) -- Authorities were sent to an East Vallejo home Thursday, after police said they received a credible threat of explosives inside the home.

FBI bomb experts were also sent to the home on the 3700 block of Georgia Street, where residents in a two block area were evacuated.

Vallejo police told CBS 5 that the resident has been "manufacturing and detonating" bombs in recent days, and was believed to be making another bomb Thursday when his roommates reported him to police.

"People inside that residence described someone who was involved in the manufacturing and the use of explosive devices. We deemed that information reliable and mobilized a SWAT team and a bomb disposal unit," said Sgt. Jeff Bassett.

When Vallejo police officers arrived at the home around 4:30 p.m., the suspect immediately surrendered.

"As we were preparing to block streets off...the suspect came out of his residence inquiring what was going on," Bassett said. "He was recognized and taken into custody."

Police are not identifying the suspect.

"We've got some information from him, and based on that information we're going to begin serving a search warrant with the help of the bomb disposal unit out of Solano County Sheriff's Office," Bassett said. "We're right in the middle of the investigation, so we don't know what his motives might be…if it's a hobby, or if he's angry or if he's testing. We have no idea."

Authorities said the bomb disposal team detonated bomb making materials on the street in front of the home around 9:00 p.m. Several more devices, which authorities said were pipe bombs, were detonated in the backyard of the home after 10 p.m.

It was not immediately known when the evacuated residents would be allowed back into their homes.
