'Roaming Rapist' Suspect Arrested In Dozens Of Sacramento-Area Rapes

SACRAMENTO (CBS/AP) -- Authorities have used DNA technology to make an arrest in a nearly decade-old series of Sacramento-area rapes.

Prosecutors say the man they called the "roaming rapist" attacked 10 women throughout Sacramento County from 1998 to 2003. His victims ranged in age from 14 to 42.

They had trouble linking the attacks because the rapist stuck to no particular pattern.

Investigators collected DNA samples from victims but were unable to find a match until last week. That's when a state crime lab used updated technology to find a general match to the suspect's brother, a convicted felon awaiting trial on sexual assault charges.

Investigators then were able to zero in on the suspect, 39-year-old Dereck Sanders of Isleton, a delta town south of Sacramento.

He was arrested Friday on 35 counts.
