Man Plunges To His Death While Hiking With Friends In Berkeley Hills
BERKELEY (CBS 5) -- A man on a nightly hike with his friends in the Berkeley Hills was found dead from an apparent fall Wednesday night.
Authorities said the man and his friends were hiking along Grizzly Peak Boulevard, at the edge of the UC Berkeley campus. Around 6:30 p.m., the group contacted police after they noticed the man was missing.
When campus police arrived, they found the victim 200 feet down a hillside, in a rocky ravine. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 20-year-old man's identity has not been released by authorities. UC Berkeley officials said the victim was not affiliated with the school.
Berkeley firefighters were called to the scene to recover the man's body, which has been handed over to the coroner's office.
Police told CBS 5 while there are no apparent signs of foul play, the incident remains under investigation.
UC Berkeley Police Capt. Margo Bennett said the members of the group said they had been drinking prior to the apparent accident.
"It's never a good idea to drink and do any physical activity," Bennett said.
