SJ Robberies, Chase, Gunfight, Standoff, End With Arrest

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- San Jose police detained one suspect and were searching for the second suspect who fled police following an officer-involved shooting in East San Jose Friday night, according to police.

Two men with firearms are suspected of having conducted four robberies Thursday in San Jose, according to San Jose police Sgt. Jason Dwyer.

Dwyer said the robberies included a pizza parlor, a gas station, a fast food restaurant, and possibly a citizen.

Police attained a suspect vehicle description from witnesses and located the vehicle at 9:13 p.m. on U.S. Highway 101 near Interstate Highway 280.

When police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle fled.

A high-speed vehicle pursuit ensued, Dwyer said.

The suspect vehicle stopped at the intersection of Tully Road and Lanai Avenue.

One of the suspects exited the vehicle and opened fire on the marked police car that was stopped behind him, police said.

Several of the suspect's rounds struck the police vehicle and caused minor injuries to a police officer, Dwyer said.

A second officer in a separate police vehicle returned fire at the suspect.

One suspect fled the scene in the vehicle and the other suspect fled on foot, according to Dwyer.

The injured officer and the second officer both continued their pursuit of the suspect vehicle.

The vehicle crashed in the area of Cunningham Avenue and Tymn Way, near William C. Overfelt High School.

The suspect driving the vehicle fled on foot into a residential neighborhood, police said.

Members of the San Jose Police Department's Special Operations Unit responded to the area, located the suspect and took him into custody.

The suspect had a gunshot wound which is not considered to be life threatening, police said.

The investigation into the second suspect's whereabouts and any connection to Thursday's armed robberies is ongoing.

The injured police officer was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, Dwyer said.

The name of the injured officer has not yet been released.
