1-Day Strike Disrupts Activity At Port Of Oakland
OAKLAND (CBS/AP) - Striking custodial and maintenance workers have disrupted normal work activity at the Port of Oakland.
Port spokesman Isaac Kos-Read said the workers were preventing trucks from entering the facility Tuesday morning. Longshoremen were also being kept from their jobs.
Kos-Read said six of the seven terminals at the port had waiting ships in what was expected to be a busy day in the midst of the holiday season.
Oakland International Airport workers were also part of the one-day strike and walked off the job Monday night. Kos-Read said air travel was not affected.
KCBS' Holly Quan Reports:
The workers accuse port officials of failing to bargain for a new contract in good faith. Port officials say they're seeking only modest concessions, and the workers are well-compensated.
