SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Police Thursday identified a man who was arrested Wednesday night after allegedly striking a patrol car with his vehicle while trying to evade police in the city’s Sunnyside neighborhood.

Malachi Barton, 24, was arrested in connection with an incident that began at about 3 p.m. near Monterey Boulevard and Gennessee Street, police said.

Barton had been released from federal prison earlier this week after serving time for gun violations, and had an outstanding warrant for failing to report to his parole meeting, police spokesman Sgt. Mike Andraychak said.

Police said that when officers spotted Barton on Monterey Boulevard, he fled in a green Ford Mustang, striking a marked patrol car before speeding away. No officers were injured in the collision.

Police found the Mustang abandoned a short time later near Holly Park Circle in the city’s Bernal Heights neighborhood, but Barton was not found.

At about 8:30 p.m., police received an anonymous tip that Barton was at a nearby home in the 100 block of Appleton Avenue.

Police sent the department’s tactical and K-9 units, along with crisis negotiators, to the scene and contacted Barton, who surrendered without further incident, police said.

He was booked into jail on suspicion of felony evasion of police, assault with a deadly weapon and the parole violation, according to police.
